Jamie Carragher reacts to suggestion Steven Gerrard should replace Arne Slot at Liverpool

Arne Slot’s job at Liverpool is not fully safe just yet, with there still being rumours about who could take over.

The Reds may have got a much-needed win against West Ham at the weekend, but they will need to keep this going if questions are to stop being asked.

Slot in particular is under a lot of pressure and many names have already been linked with taking over from him should he be sacked, with one of these being Steven Gerrard.

The former Liverpool captain has been out of a job since leaving Al Ettifaq in January, with the scouser also turning down the Rangers vacancy in October.

This has led many to believe that he could potentially take over from Slot, and Jamie Carragher has had his say on the matter.

Gerrard is, of course, a Liverpool legend and he is one of the greatest English footballers of all time, but his managerial career has not been as sparkling.

He did well at Rangers and won the league there during his time in charge, but his spell at Aston Villa in the Premier League did not go to plan at all.

Moving to Saudi Arabia then all but ended any chances of him getting another big job, although links to Liverpool suggest there is still a possibility he gets the opportunity.

Carragher, though, cannot see this happening, with the former defender believing Liverpool fans would not really want it either.

‘No, I wouldn’t imagine [that Gerrard would get the job],” he said on The Overlap.

“You mentioned about Villa, but he’s had great success at Rangers as well.

“Obviously he’s a legendary figure and he’s back, he’s floating around Liverpool, isn’t he? He’s back in town if you like.

“But I don’t think most Liverpool fans would be screaming for Stevie Gerrard. I think everyone’s desperate for it to work for Slot.”

Steven Gerrard would not be a good appointment

Although he would be able to bring a sense of togetherness and unite all fans again, appointing Gerrard would not be a good move at all.

His track record is not the best, so giving him such a high-pressure job after a long time away seems a recipe for disaster.

Liverpool fans will also not want anything to tarnish his reputation, suggesting that it might be best if he is remembered for his time as a player rather than how he did as a manager.

If Slot were to be sacked, giving Gerrard until the end of the season might not be the worst idea in the world, but anything long-term must be avoided at all costs.
