Former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke has officially announced his departure from D.C. United.
The Belgian took to social media to confirm his exit from the American capital, just days after the club declined his 2026 contract option.
The decision comes as a surprise to many, given D.C. United had hoped to negotiate a new deal with their talismanic striker even after declining his contract option.
The club’s managing director Erkut Sogut had previously stated they remained “in discussions” with Benteke’s representatives about a potential return, but it appears the Belgian has now made his intentions clear.
Benteke arrived in Washington from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2022 and quickly established himself as the focal point of the attack.
Across 93 MLS appearances, he netted 47 goals and provided 10 assists, with his crowning achievement coming in 2024 when he won the MLS Golden Boot with 23 goals.
The striker’s aerial dominance became legendary in the league. He led MLS in aerial duels won in each of his three full seasons, setting a record of 309 duels won in 2024 alone, smashing the previous mark of 174.
A two-time MLS All-Star and 2024 Best XI selection, Benteke carried D.C. United’s attack almost single-handedly during a turbulent period for the club.
Despite his individual brilliance, the team struggled around him. D.C. United failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of Benteke’s three full seasons, finishing bottom of the overall standings in 2025.
Now a free agent, the Belgian can sign with any MLS or overseas club as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.
Posting a quick message on Instagram, Benteke wrote:
“Thank you to D.C. United for giving me the opportunity to grow and prove myself in MLS. To the fans, my teammates, the staff, and the city, your support during my 3 years meant everything to me.”
“Grateful for the journey and ready for the next chapter.”
“Christian Benteke.”
