The Athletic provide Alisson contract update

Alisson made his first appearance in months during the victory against West Ham at the weekend.

The Brazilian had been sidelined since September’s Champions League defeat to Galatasaray with a hamstring injury, then missed the midweek loss to PSV through illness, leaving Arne Slot to lean heavily on new signing Giorgi Mamardashvili during a grim run of results.

Back between the posts at the London Stadium, Alisson immediately restored authority to the defence.

His calm distribution and trademark penalty‑area command underpinned a much‑needed 2–0 victory.

Alisson sees his contract expires in 2026, with a fresh update now being given on his situation.

Gregg Evans of the Athletic has reported that Liverpool will likely look to exercise the extra year option in his contract:

“Alisson’s contract also expires at the end of the year, but Liverpool are expected to take up the one-year option they have to extend it into 2027.”

“The Brazilian goalkeeper spoke about it while he was on international duty earlier this year as reported by BeIn Sports: “I have one year left on my contract and another year of club option, which they will probably exercise.”

The expected extension would take Alisson through to 2027, when he will be 34 years old. It represents sensible succession planning from Liverpool, who have already secured Mamardashvili as the long-term heir to the No. 1 shirt.

The Georgian arrived at Anfield this summer following a £29m move from Valencia and has deputised admirably during Alisson’s absence, keeping clean sheets against Aston Villa and Real Madrid.

Alisson has previously revealed what his post-Anfield plans are, saying last year that he wants to eventually return to his boyhood club Sport Club Internacional:

“I watch all of Inter’s games,” the Liverpool man said.

“There’s always that feeling of good memories and a desire to wear the Inter shirt again.

“I have a three-year contract with Liverpool. I don’t think the future is definitive for anyone, but in football, I hope to fulfill my contract here in England and, then, after that… I’m open (to returning).”
