Luis Guilherme got the nod as the Hammers’ impact substitute against Liverpool, and whilst he wouldn’t score, he provided glimmers of wonder for the Hammers.
The Brazilian youth prospect has been bigged up ever since he put pen to paper but the overall hype around the teenager hasn’t been able to be translated onto the pitch in where injuries have further halted his progression in being able to fight for more minutes, but as the Hammers find themselves in dire times with little to no squad depth, he’s sparked himself into being the pole option for consideration.
Despite being substituted on in the 68th minute, for the remaining 22 he was on the pitch for, Guilherme managed to create numerous chances and almost looked like he could be our hope in scoring a goal and at this point, levelling the game.
However, it appeared the Brazilian was a slot machine which got 2/3 spins in his favour! Persistently, he would pick up the ball, make a darting run through the defence or midfield using a handy bit of skill, but his final product was extremely underwhelming as he lacks that matchday experience in the Premier League… he would either lose the ball by taking too long to make a decision, or make a nervous pass that wouldn’t work.
Whilst the criticism may be apparent and slightly warranted, it’s important to remember that if he were to improve upon his final product, he could most easily become the player that many anticipated him to become initially and having someone who can come on and dance through the midfield and defence of the reigning Premier League holders is definitely something to keep an eye on.
A dismal appearance against Bournemouth but an impressive cameo against Liverpool, all players have their ups and downs. Let’s hope he can crack on and have a real meaningful contribution soon.
