Jamie Carragher has stopped short of hailing Luis Diaz in light of his Liverpool exit as he claimed the Colombian was "going to look good in the Bundesliga because it’s not as good" as the Premier League.

The winger decided to call time on his spell at Anfield in the summer as he made the move to Bayern Munich. In his new home he's been a big hit, scoring 12 times in 19 games, including two in a statement win at PSG, to leave him as the team's second top scorer behind Harry Kane.

Bayern spent £65.5million to secure Diaz's services with the player's contract winding down. Despite his success - and Liverpool's demise - Carragher maintains it was good business to sell him given his age profile and wasn't getting carried away by his form in Germany.

The ex-player also claimed Diaz "wasn't great" at Anfield, naming several former players who were ahead of the Colombian, and believes Florian Wirtz could eventually fill the void that he left.

Carragher said on the Overlap Fan Debate: "That’s where I think the hierarchy of the club has said Arne Slot is (only) the head coach. Arne Slot might’ve wanted to keep him, but they (the Liverpool hierarchy) said he’s 28, if we give him a new contract he’ll be on massive money. It was a good deal for Liverpool, and he’s going to look good in the Bundesliga because it’s not as good as the Premier League.

“Diaz was a very good player for Liverpool, but he wasn’t great – he wasn’t Firmino, he wasn’t Mane, he wasn’t Salah. He was a good player; Liverpool got some good years out of him and got a good price – it was a good deal for Liverpool. What they haven’t done is replace him, but if Wirtz becomes what we hope him to be, he’s a different player but he’s that player between the lines to the left, so you’ll get that from him.”

Diaz scored 17 times last term, his best tally across his three and a half seasons with Liverpool, as he claimed a Premier League winners' medal. The Reds did undergo huge upheaval in the summer with their frontline seeing mass changes.

The decision not to directly replace Diaz has been criticised but it is understood that was motivated by a desire to allow yougster Rio Ngumoha a route into the first-team. Lyon's Malick Fofana was considered as a replacement, but ultimately never pursued.

British-record signing Alexander Isak scored for only the second time at the weekend as he struggles to get up to speed since his move from Newcastle. Mohamed Salah was dropped to the bench for the West Ham victory with his numbers falling off a cliff whilst Wirtz is yet to have a single goal contribution since his move.
