Liverpool are on the market for a long-term successor for Mohamed Salah
Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Antoine Semenyo, which also involves competition from Premier League rivals.
The Reds are eager to sign a new goalscoring winger, who can succeed Mohamed Salah on the right-hand side of the attack moving forwards. The Egyptian’s contract is due to expire in 2027 but there have been talks of the club selling him before then, as his significant dip in performances this season have been a cause for concern.
Salah was demoted to the bench for the first time in the Premier League this season when Liverpool faced West Ham. The 33-year-old was an unused substitute during the Reds’ much-needed 2-0 win.
Salah has just eight goalscoring contributions in 18 appearances throughout all competitions so far this season, which is wide of his usual electric standard performances in attack.
Salah’s age and expiring contract highlighted the urgency for Liverpool to sign a long-term successor for the Egyptian, but his dip in form suggests they need someone in the immediate as well.
Liverpool rival Man City for Antoine Semenyo
It’s no secret by now that Liverpool are fond admirers of Semenyo. The Premier League champions are hopeful of doing business with Bournemouth but they face stiff competition from other rivals for the in-form winger.
Romano has provided an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Semenyo, who has a £65 million release clause in place.
“Manchester United, at this stage, are not in active talks for Semenyo because their focus is on investing big money in different positions, like a new midfielder,” the transfer expert said on his YouTube channel.
“Liverpool and Manchester City, both clubs remain well informed on the release clause of Antoine Semenyo, valid in January. So keep an eye on that situation, because at the moment, still nothing is decided.
“Now is December, so in the next weeks the situation will be more clear, but the Semenyo story, at this stage, is still very much on. So let’s see what’s going to happen with the clubs interested in Antoine Semenyo.”
Will Liverpool sell Mohamed Salah?
Rumours have been circling Salah’s situation recently, suggesting Liverpool could look to sanction a sale before his contract expires in 2027. The Egyptian has previously been the burning transfer desire of Saudi Arabia and it seems the clubs are still on the radar after all this time.
According to former Everton chief Keith Wyness, Salah has an ‘open offer’ from Saudi that he can explore whenever he chooses to.
“It’s definitely that sort of £150m level, if not more, because he’s going to be doing a lot of ads,” Wyness told Football Insider.
“They’ve left the offer open but he’ll have to go fairly soon because it’s best to go when you’re at the top. They might be thinking okay, it’s time to make a move while we’ve still got some good years in our legs and show some spectacular things.
“Ronaldo has knocked in some amazing numbers since he’s been in Saudi and he’s still banging goals in and some really quality goals as well. I think Salah wants to do the same, have some good years down there, so I would expect the move sooner than later.”
