Despite not having played in the NBA for over a decade, former All-Star Gilbert Arenas has remained a somewhat central figure in the melodrama of it all given his outsized and controversial personality.
Earlier this year, for example, Gilbert Arenas was arrested in July in connection to an illegal gambling ring, which was months before the larger indictments were unveiled by the feds in late October, leading many to half-jokingly assume that Arenas had snitched.
Despite the arrest, Arenas has remained out in the world and active, as he hosts his own podcast called Gil’s Arena, where the topic of Matt Barnes allegedly getting scammed out of $61,000 by an AI extortion scheme was recently discussed.

“The woman allegedly used artificial intelligence to create convincing deep fake audio, video, and messages that made Barnes appear unfaithful,” Arenas’ co-host Josiah Johnson said.
“Damn,” Arenas added. “If she did all that, she got to have pictures or something now. … I’m telling you right now, if I’m paying $60,000, I’m getting whatever you selling. And it ain’t going to be no, hey… For me to shush-shush. How you get catfished like that?”
In a post that Barnes — who played for the Clippers, Kings, Knicks, 76ers, Warriors, Suns, Magic, Lakers, and Grizzlies during his 13-year-long NBA career — shared on Instagram, he said that he’s planning on suing “Tasha K” for posting allegedly AI-generated audio and video that depicted him as cheating on his partner Anansa Sims.
At this time, however, it does not appear that Barnes has officially filed the lawsuit.
