Former Everton midfielder endures nightmare having lost 14 games as a new manager this season

Many former Everton players have tried their hand at management since hanging up the boots.

Mikel Arteta is without a doubt the most successful one, as he looks on course to win the Premier League with Arsenal this season.

Arteta learned his trade under the likes of David Moyes, Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola when he was an assistant at Manchester City.

On the other hand, Wayne Rooney has really struggled as a manager despite his exceptional playing career.

Rooney has been sacked by Plymouth Argyle and Birmingham City in the last couple of years and is currently out of work.

Another former Everton player is also enduring a tough time as a new manager, having lost a whopping 14 games this season.

Former Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley enduring nightmare at Plymouth Argyle

Former Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley was brutally sacked by Watford earlier this year, with many disagreeing with the decision.

Cleverley actually left Watford with his stock rather high and he was subsequently interviewed for the Southampton job.

The 36-year-old didn’t get that role but he did land the Plymouth job, which seemed a decent gig as they were favourites to get promoted back to the Championship.

However, it’s been a total nightmare for Cleverley, as he’s already lost 14 games this season, with Plymouth sitting in 23rd.

Cleverley’s side were beaten convincingly by Northampton at the weekend and fans have been calling for him to be sacked.

Tom Cleverley convinced he can turn it around

Speaking after the 3-0 defeat to Northampton, Cleverley came out and reaffirmed his commitment to Plymouth.

“January comes and we’ll get some reinforcements and hopefully some confidence through better results than today, and then we can be a little bit more pretty on the eye,” the former Toffees star explained.

“But yes, absolutely I feel like I’m in the best place to do that. I know exactly where it is going wrong, putting that right is going to take a lot of work and obviously everyone pulling in the right direction.”

It seems the Plymouth board are sticking with Cleverley, and quite remarkably, they could still get promoted this season if he can improve results.

Despite languishing in the relegation zone, Argyle are only 12 points adrift from the play-offs, which is surmountable at this stage of the season.
