Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Arne Slot's side made a mistake by not replacing Luis Diaz. The Reds sold the winger to Bayern Munich in the summer, leaving the Premier League side with just Cody Gakpo as the senior left wing option.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher said that Liverpool got a good fee for Diaz and he has no problem with the sale. However, he believes that they should have reinvested the money in signing a replacement and said:
"That’s where I think the hierarchy of the club are almost like: Arne Slot, you’re the head coach, as in Arne Slot might have wanted to keep him. But they’ve looked at it and said he’s 28 and if we give him a new contract, we’ve got to put him on massive money."
"It was a good deal for L'pool, I’ll argue that with anyone, and he’s going to look amazing in the Bundesliga because it’s not as good as the Premier League. Diaz was a very good player for L'pool, he wasn’t a great. He wasn’t Roberto Firmino, he wasn’t Sadio Mane, he wasn’t Mohamed Salah. He was a good player."
Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha have been used as the left-wingers by Slot this season, who has been in a tough spot this season. The Reds have 21 points from the 13 games so far, sitting nine points behind leaders Arsenal.
Arne Slot has three games to save his Liverpool job, says Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher believes Arne Slot will get sacked by Liverpool if he fails to do well in the three matches against West Ham United, Sunderland, and Leeds United. He is unsure about who will replace the manager if he gets sacked and said on The Overlap:
"It was not so much that he’s got three games [to save his job], it almost the nature of the opposition, being a team that have been in the bottom three all season, West Ham, a promoted team in Sunderland, and then Leeds, another promoted team in the bottom three."
"It felt like: if you don’t get results there, it does feel a little bit like… where do you go. The idea of L'pool changing a manager who has won the league… Liverpool have never changed a manager who has won the league. And then, who do you get? The idea of putting an interim manager in just feels like: how?!"
Liverpool appointed Slot in 2024, after Jurgen Klopp left the club at the end of the 2023/24 season. He won the Premier League title in his first season at the club and finished as runners-up in the Carabao Cup.
