Billy Gilmour shares photo from hospital bed after surgery
Billy Gilmour revealed he has successfully undergone surgery for a serious groin problem with the start of the World Cup just over six months away.
And the Scotland star has received support from his teammates at both club and country level including Kevin De Bruyne, Scott McTominay and Lewis Ferguson. The Napoli midfielder played 26 times last season to help his side lift the fourth Serie A title in their history and has made a decent start to the current campaign, scoring once in his first nine league matches.
Gilmour has not been a regular starter under Antonio Conte but has performed well when the team's first choice holding midfield player Stanislav Lobotka has been absent. However, Gilmour has not featured for the Scudetto holders since limping off in a 0-0 draw with Como on November 1, and while he was included in the Scotland squad that secured qualification for the World Cup finals last month, played no part in the clashes with Greece and Denmark.
Ex Chelsea, Norwich and Brighton playmaker travelled to London to receive special treatment for his groin injury and has now shared an update, posting a picture on social media from his hospital bed.
Writing on Instagram he said: "The start of the road to recovery after a successful surgery. After a period of discomfort pushing through pain, we’ve worked with specialists to find the right time to undergo treatment and help put this issue behind me.
"I’ll miss the matchdays and the fans from the middle of the pitch for a little while, but I’m already raring to be back out there and focused on the journey ahead of me. See you soon everyone. Keep smiling."
Gilmour's post was inundated with messages of support from his teammates, with Manchester City icon Kevin de Bruyne leading the tributes.

He commented: "All the best brother" while several other Napoli pals including McTominay, Amir Rrahmani and Alex Meret also offered messages of support.
Scotland duo Ferguson and Ryan Christie also passed on their well-wishes, with Gilmour's post receiving over 22,000 likes on Instagram.
English Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater played alongside the Tartan Army hero while he was at Chelsea and was also quick to share a positive message.
