Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris names one reason Liverpool has'struggled'for form

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris said a drop in confidence may be the reason behind Liverpool’s recent downturn in form.

Prior to Sunday’s 2-0 win over West Ham United, the Reds had lost nine out of 12 in all competitions, which significantly raised the pressure on Arne Slot.

But that victory at the London Stadium has changed the mood around the Liverpool camp heading into the game against this season’s surprise packet. When the Premier League fixtures were first released in the summer, few would have believed newly-promoted Sunderland would travel to Anfield ahead of the reigning champions in the table.

But that’s the scenario that faces Slot when Le Bris’ squad makes the journey south in midweek.

“We worked hard to have the privilege to play this sort of game,” the Frenchman said in Tuesday’s press conference.

“I think it’s a great honor to be in that kind of position. It’s a tough game but we want to live these kinds of experiences.

“It’s another game in another really special place,” he continued. “But I think our players, even if it is a young team, now have the good experience and they want to be competitive.

“Otherwise, we will be spectators. Liverpool will be strong, 100 percent. The place [Anfield] is impressive, but we want to be competitive.

When asked about Liverpool’s disappointing set of recent results, Le Bris opined: “ Every team can struggle at times because this league is tough.

“They play in the Champions League as well, so have so many games. Sometimes it’s a question of confidence, a question of events and you can struggle for a short period.

“They were strong against West Ham, and dominant as expected. We will need to show the best version of Sunderland.”

The Black Cats have already won at the City Ground and Stamford Bridge this season, and have taken points off Arsenal and Aston Villa. Therefore, Le Bris believes his squad can earn a first win at Anfield since 1983.

“We showed we want to be bold, accepting the risk to be punished — it is possible,” said the 49-year-old. “At least you want to play your football, press high.

“If that is not possible, we will play a mid-deep block and be consistent. If it’s possible to play even under pressure, let’s try.

“We can’t focus too much on the opponent,” he added. “They are really strong and it is a top Champions League team.

“Then Manchester City three days later… but if you focus too much on the opponent, you will be scared. So don’t do that; let’s just focus on our strength. Let’s try and improve through those different experiences, the way we are playing.”
