Athletic journalist drops big update on "world-class" Liverpool hero's future after 2026

**A key update has emerged regarding Alisson’s future at Liverpool beyond the summer of 2026, courtesy of The Athletic’s Gregg Evans.**

The Brazilian has become an Anfield icon since joining the Reds from Roma in 2018, standing out as arguably the world’s best goalkeeper in that time, and winning the Champions League and Premier League, among numerous other trophies.

Alisson’s influence has been a huge reason for a glorious period in Liverpool’s history, with him and Virgil van Dijk turning them into a dominant force.

The 33-year-old is out of contract at Anfield at the end of this season, but there is the option of extending it by a further 12 months, should all parties agree to it.

According to [_The Athletic_](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6852050/2025/12/02/liverpool-transfer-latest-january-summer-2026/?source=emp_shared_article)‘s Evans, Liverpool are “expected to take up the one-year option”, with the Brazil star recently saying: _“I have one year left on my contract and another year of club option, which they will probably exercise.”_

**An Alisson extension a no-brainer for Liverpool**

---------------------------------------------------

Triggering the extra year on Alisson’s contract makes total sense for Liverpool – frankly, they may even hope that he stays put beyond 2027, considering he is still far from old as a goalkeeper, potentially playing for another five years at the top level.

The Reds’ No.1 remains an elite player in his position, with [Stephen Warnock](https://www.teamtalk.com/liverpool/best-ever-alisson-showered-in-praise-three-legends-including-man-utd-icon-hail-liverpool-star) describing him as “world-class” and Arne Slot simply saying: _“He’s the best goalkeeper in the world. I’ve never seen someone at this level.”_

While Giorgi Mamardashvili has come in as a strong deputy to Alisson, and a possible future replacement for him, his older teammate remains easily Liverpool’s strongest choice between the sticks.

The only issue with him are injuries, which have started to creep in more and more with age of late, but the positives easily outweigh the negatives, and he remains one of the first names on the team sheet.

Alisson has an aura that few ‘keepers in the world possess, instantly making the defence feel more at ease, and his performances are going to be crucial in the coming weeks and months, as Liverpool look to turn their stuttering season around.
