David Beckham could not resist taking a playful swipe at Liverpool over the weekend after the Manchester United legend attended the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix. The Reds currently sit eighth in the Premier League, level on points with their bitter rivals but a place behind on goal difference alone.

Liverpool have endured a torrid season so far despite coming into the campaign as reigning Premier League champions. They returned to winning ways on Sunday to move up to eighth after beating West Ham United, but have still lost nine of their last 13 matches in all competitions.

The Reds are back in action on Wednesday night as they host Sunderland, with the Red Devils then welcoming West Ham to Old Trafford on Thursday.

Consequently, Liverpool will have the opportunity to leapfrog their old foes during the next round of Premier League fixtures.

United were also in action on Sunday as they came from behind to win 2-1 away at Crystal Palace. And Red Devils legend Beckham was otherwise engaged, along with his former England team-mates Gary Neville, Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand, with the quartet among the plethora of famous faces who attended the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix.

Lando Norris could have won the drivers world championship on Sunday had results gone his way.

But the Brit finished fourth as Max Verstappen instead won at the Losail Circuit to keep the championship alive heading into the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi next week, with both drivers and Oscar Piastri all still able to be crowned world champion .

With the likes of Beckham, Neville, Gerrard and Ferdinand watching proceedings on track, they would have been left unable to properly follow the fortunes of Manchester United and Liverpool respectively on Sunday afternoon - though they would have at least been pleased to see their former clubs pick up maximum points.

And Beckham was in good spirits after the race as he took a dig at the Reds on his Instagram story.

The Manchester United legend uploaded a video of himself in an Adidas shop alongside a number of baseball caps, including Liverpool and Red Devils hats.

Beckham could not resist the opportunity to pick up one Manchester United cap and place it on top of the Reds hat to cover the badge of his rivals, before turning to the camera and declaring: “That’s a lot better!”

Alongside the video, which has also been posted by CBS Sports, he would also tag his former club and write the same message along with a wink emoji.
