Chelsea And Man United Plot£60m Bids For In-Form Newcastle United Star In Shock January Move

Chelsea and Man United are reportedly plotting moves to sign a Newcastle United attacker in the January transfer window.

The Blues are heading into their next game against Leeds United on Wednesday night off the back of an excellent 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the weekend. Chelsea were arguably the better team in the game, but were down to 10 men, which damaged their chances of winning.

Enzo Maresca will be delighted with how his side has performed this season, as they find themselves in a three-way title fight with Arsenal and Manchester City. With that in mind, Chelsea will likely be keen to make the most of their chance this season and potentially strengthen in January.

A report by Fichajes claims that both Man United and Chelsea are plotting a £60m bid for Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes, who has been one of the most in-form players in the Premier League over the past few weeks.

Barnes joined Newcastle in 2023 for a fee of £39m from Leicester City, and he has since been a very reliable option for Eddie Howe. The 27-year-old has scored 21 goals, and provided 10 assists in 83 appearances for the Magpies.

He plays primarily as a left-winger, and could help boost Maresca’s depth alongside the likes of Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens.

Do the Blues need another attacker?

The issue with this potential deal is that Chelsea already have a lot of talent in their wide attacking areas, and so why don’t they spend the money elsewhere to strengthen a different position.

Centre-back has been an issue for Chelsea for some time now, and Maresca could instead look to bring in a new defender, and they wouldn’t even have to spent the £60m.

They could go after Marc Guehi, who is expected to cost just £35m in January, and boost their back line to potentially help them stay with the likes of Man City and Arsenal in the title race.
