Former Boston Celtics forward announces retirement

Danilo Gallinari is walking away from basketball as the longtime NBA veteran announced his retirement from basketball Tuesday. Gallinari last played in Puerto Rico, winning a title there, after spending 16 years in the NBA.

“Today, with a heart full of gratitude, I am announcing my retirement from the career I’ve always dreamed of,” Gallinari wrote on social media. “It’s been an incredible journey filled with countless memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”

Gallinari spent the 2022-23 season with the Celtics, though he didn’t play in a game as he rehabbed a torn left ACL. He signed a two-year deal with Boston in hopes of competing for a title. But he was sidelined for his lone season then was traded to the Wizards as part of the Kristaps Porzingis deal.

Gallinari, 37, was taken sixth overall by the Knicks in the 2008 draft. He also played for the Nuggets, Clippers, Thunder, Hawks, Wizards, Pistons and Bucks during his career. Gallinari last played in the NBA during the 2023-24 season, when he bounced around from Washington to Detroit to Milwaukee.

Over 777 games (563 starts), Gallinari averaged 14.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists as he was known as a talented scorer. He also shot 38.1% from beyond the arc, making 1,456 3-pointers during his career.
