Sunderland injury latest ahead of Liverpool clash

Sunderland have approached this season’s Premier League with fearlessness, currently sitting sixth in the table and boasting an unbeaten record in seven home games.

In contrast, Liverpool, coming off last season’s title-winning campaign, have endured a patchy run of form, losing five of their last eight league matches.

Ahead of tomorrow night’s clash at Anfield, Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris provided an injury update.

He confirmed that Noah Sadiki is still recovering after taking a blow to the face during the win over Bournemouth at the weekend.

Cherries midfielder Lewis Cook received a straight red card for elbowing Sadiki deep into injury time, leaving the Sunderland midfielder down for an extended period.

Despite a swollen face, Le Bris believes Sadiki will be in contention for the game.

“He’s suffered and he still is now,” Le Bris said. “He will be okay for Wednesday but he suffered.”

The Sunderland boss is expected to have a largely similar squad to the one that defeated Bournemouth, with Dennis Cirkin and Leo Hjelde continuing their recovery, having logged minutes for the U21s last week.

Le Bris said: “They are really close which is good news. Like Romaine one week before.

“It’s really important to have everyone connected and in their best shape so they’re ready.”

The Black Cats have already claimed victories at the City Ground and Stamford Bridge this season, and have also taken points off Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Le Bris believes his squad has what it takes to secure their first win at Anfield since 1983.

“We showed we want to be bold, accepting the risk to be punished — it is possible,” said the 49-year-old.

“At least you want to play your football, press high.

“If that is not possible, we will play a mid-deep block and be consistent. If it’s possible to play even under pressure, let’s try.

“We can’t focus too much on the opponent,” he added.

“They are really strong and it is a top Champions League team.

“Then Manchester City three days later… but if you focus too much on the opponent, you will be scared.

“So don’t do that; let’s just focus on our strength. Let’s try and improve through those different experiences, the way we are playing.”
