Celtics Are Head And Shoulders Above Rest Of NBA In Key Metric

The Boston Celtics haven’t been perfect through their first 20 games of the 2025-26 campaign, but they have proven they can compete with any team on a nightly basis. With an 11-9 record so far, the C’s look like they may have a real shot at contending for a playoff spot as the season unfolds. There are several things that Boston has been very good at this season, and several things it has been very bad at. Rebounding and finding ways to score when Jaylen Brown is off the floor are two key issues that head coach Joe Mazzulla is still working on solving early in the new season. One area where the Celtics have been phenomenal, though, is the turnover department. The C’s are averaging just 11.6 turnovers per game, which is the lowest figure in the league. Beyond that, though, Boston is simply refusing to throw the ball away, as they have the fewest bad-pass turnovers in the league. Without Jayson Tatum, the Celtics have had to become creative when it comes to finding ways to score the ball. That makes limiting turnovers extremely important because this team cannot afford to waste many offensive possessions, and in turn, they can’t allow their opponents to get out and run the fastbreak. Jaylen Brown’s 3.6 turnovers per game are a bit of a sore spot, but rotating through these guys as the team’s primary playmakers has helped keep opposing defenses off balance. With a less talented roster than in years past, the C’s need to focus on winning on the margins, and their ability to limit turnovers is just one of the ways they have accomplished that goal. After committing 16 turnovers against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, Boston will look to play a cleaner game vs. the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.
