Liverpool are reported to be interested in signing Iliman Ndiaye but who are the last 10 players to make the switch?
Liverpool are preparing for life after Mohamed Salah with the Anfield legend already showing signs of decline after a rapid drop off in form after his record-breaking season in the Premier League title success last year.
The last 10 players to make Liverpool and Everton switch
The 25-year old winger wouldn’t be the first to cross the Merseyside divide although he would be the first since Abel Xavier in 2002 in what is a list of the good and the, not so good. Here are the last 10 players who swapped the blue of Everton for the red of Liverpool or vice versa.
In 2002, Xavier was approaching the last six-months of his contract which could have seen him leaving cash-strapped Everton for free until Liverpool made a surprise £800,000 bid for the Portugal international. He left just 18-months later after a loan period at Galatasaray too.
One move that caused quite a stir was when Everton’s talisman Nick Barmby was the subject of a £6m move to Liverpool in the summer of 2000. Whether it was the pressure or constant scrutiny, the former Spurs playmaker was unable to replicate his Goodison Park form scoring only eight goals in 58 appearances.
The late Gary Ablett was a popular figure at both clubs and as dependable a centre-half as could be found in English football with 300 appearances between the two clubs. He swapped Liverpool for Everton for around £750,000 and was worth every penny.
The best player to play for Liverpool and Everton?
As with Ablett, it is rare for a player to be equally as popular at either half of Liverpool but this is exactly the case with Peter Beardsley. The playmaker had a goal scoring ratio of one every three games for both teams as well as numerous assists too. There is a strong case for Beardsley to be the best player to play for Liverpool and Everton given how effective he was as a second striker, no.10 or playing through the middle. A player both clubs could do with now.
Alan Harper was a manager’s dream. He maybe didn’t impact the first team at Liverpool quite how he would have wanted, however, he spent five years at Everton covering every blade of grass in almost every position on the park after sealing a £100,000 transfer from Anfield to head to Goodison Park. Harper was a Reds fan, however, he couldn’t turn down the chance to play for a team that would go on to be one of the best in Europe.
There have been nearly 30 players who have moved between the two sides with David Johnson and Kevin Sheedy in 1982, Johnny Morrissey in 1962, Dave Hickson in 1959 and Tony McNamara in 1957 making up the list of the last 10 players to move between the two historical rivals. Will Ndiaye be the next?
