Liverpool’s predicted XI vs Sunderland as Arne Slot forced into changes ahead of busy week

Liverpool have two big games in the space of three days.

After getting the win against West Ham, the Reds have no time to think about things as they face off against Sunderland on Wednesday evening.

The Black Cats are one point above Liverpool in the league and have had a stellar start to their first season back in the top flight since 2017, meaning they will not be easy pickings.

Arne Slot has already admitted that he might have to make a few changes this week due to their busy schedule, suggesting that there could be a few for this one. Here is the lineup we think he will send out.

Defence

Unless anything drastic happens, Alisson Becker will start between the sticks for this one, and the Brazilian can expect to be a little busier than he was against the Hammers.

At right-back, Slot will likely opt for Joe Gomez again due to how good he was on his first start for a little while, although he has said that he cannot play three 90-minute matches in one week.

However, with Slot hoping Conor Bradley will be back for the Leeds game on Saturday, Gomez should get the nod midweek.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate will take up their usual role in the heart of defence, while Milos Kerkez will also likely keep his place after his best display since joining in the summer.

With Leeds being away from home and under the lights at the weekend, Andy Robertson will surely have to start that one due to his experience, meaning the Hungarian should start on Wednesday instead.

Midfield

The midfield battle is where the game can be won or lost against the Black Cats, meaning Slot needs to get this one right.

Ryan Gravenberch will start after having his best performance in a little while, but in front of him could be Curtis Jones rather than Alexis Mac Allister.

The Argentine looked a little leggy again on Sunday and has had injury issues of his own, suggesting giving Jones some well-deserved minutes might be best.

In the number 10 position, it has to be Florian Wirtz after his Man of the Match performance, with the German starting to come into his own.

He too cannot play three 90 minutes in a row according to Slot, but due to how physical Leeds are, as well as that one being away from home, it makes more sense for him to start this one instead.

Attack

The attack is where things get a little tricky as Slot has a few options, with the biggest talking point going to be whether Mohamed Salah should come back into the team.

He was an unused substitute for the first time under Slot, although we think he might, and probably should, start on the bench again due to how impressive Dominik Szoboszlai was.

Despite scoring and assisting, Cody Gakpo could also drop to the bench for Hugo Ekitike, with the Frenchman in need, and deserving, of some minutes.

He will not get that up front, though, as after scoring his first league goal for the Reds, Alexander Isak will surely lead the line in search of another.
