Liverpool returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday.
It may not have matched Sunderland’s dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to beat Bournemouth 3-2 a day earlier, but it was the kind of routine, controlled performance Arne Slot has been craving.
Alexander Isak finally got off the mark in the Premier League last weekend.
His second-half strike and Cody Gakpo’s stoppage-time goal fired the league champions, who had suffered nine defeats in their previous 12 matches in all competitions, to a much-needed victory.
Slot’s side welcome Sunderland to Anfield on Wednesday night.
The Reds have won their last 12 Premier League matches against promoted sides and have taken 26 of their last 28 at Anfield, including the most recent 12.
The last promoted team to beat them there was Fulham in March 2021.
Liverpool also boast a strong midweek record, having lost just one of their last 25 Premier League fixtures played on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, winning 19 of them.
Their most recent defeat in such a fixture came in April 2024, a 2-0 loss away to Everton.
Their previous midweek league defeat at Anfield in front of supporters dates all the way back to 2012.
For Sunderland, any Premier League records are historical after spending the past eight seasons outside the top flight.
In their most recent Premier League campaign (2016–17), they failed to win any of their five midweek fixtures, drawing one and failing to score in all five.
One Liverpool player who will need to be cautious is Dominik Szoboszlai.
The midfielder is one yellow card away from a one-match suspension, having been booked against Everton, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Manchester City.
Under FA disciplinary rules, any player who accumulates five yellow cards within the first 19 Premier League matches of the season must serve a one-game ban.
These suspensions do not carry over to the FA Cup or EFL Cup and must be served in league play.
