Fabrizio Romano has issued an update on a Premier League star who has been linked to Man United and Man City.
Bournemouth star winger Antoine Semenyo is a big talking point heading into the January transfer window. He has been exceptional this season, and so it is no surprise that several big clubs are interested in signing him.
The 25-year-old has made 12 Premier League appearances this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He has been a stand-out for Andoni Iralola’s side. So, it was no surprise that big teams were all left intrigued after it was revealed that he would have a £65m release clause in his contract from January.
Romano says Man United won’t go after Semenyo
Amid all the interest in the winger, Journalist Fabrizio Romano has issued an update regarding Man United, Liverpool and Man City, ahead of the January window, discussing whether a move for Semenyo is likely.
He said that it could be on for City and Liverpool, but Man United will consider alternative targets, despite the fact that Ruben Amorim likes Semenyo as a player. Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Manchester United at this stage, are not in active talks for Semenyo, because their focus at the moment is investing big money in different positions like a new midfielder. So, at this stage, they like Semenyo, yes, Amorim likes Semenyo, for sure, but the priority target is at a different position.
“Liverpool, informed, Manchester City, informed, both clubs remain well informed on the release clause of Antoine Semenyo. Keep an eye on that situation, because at the moment, still nothing is decided. The Semenyo story at this stage is still very much on.”
It seems the Red Devils are focusing more on midfield targets, but Semenyo could still get his blockbuster move, with Liverpool and City both keen.
Who could Man United target instead?
Seeing as Romano says that the Red Devils are likely to go after a midfield target instead, their number one priority is to add a holding midfielder, who can help protect Amorim’s back three, and be the long-term replacement for Casemiro.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is also a possibility, as the midfielder has reportedly had his head turned by United’s interest. The issue with Baleba is that Brighton also price him at over £100m, which could make a January deal difficult for United.
Perhaps the most likely is Wolves’ Joao Gomes, as he is only expected to cost around £44m. Seeing as Wolves are almost destined for relegation, they would likely be more willing to sell one of their better players to generate money, which they can use to bring in a couple of players to strengthen Rob Edwards’ squad for the long term.
