Salah can do something against Sunderland that he has never done before - opinion

Mohamed Salah will be desperate to go back into the starting XI for Liverpool’s game against Sunderland.

Fixtures keep coming thick and fast for the Reds, as they are back in action on Wednesday night, just three days after beating West Ham.

Arne Slot made some bold changes to his Liverpool side to get that win, with one of them being to drop Salah to the bench, with the Egyptian not even getting on the pitch for a single minute.

Against Sunderland, though, he will want to go back into the team and there is a strong chance he does, with a player of his quality too good to not be playing.

He may not have been himself this season, but he will have extra incentive to perform well in this one, with the winger having the chance to do something he has never done before.

Sunderland are one of only four Premier League teams Mohamed Salah has not scored against

Salah has been a goalscoring machine ever since he arrived in 2017, with Liverpool often very reliant on his contributions, or at least they were.

This season, though, he has just four league goals to his name, something he will be looking to change to prove a point.

He will also want to net against Sunderland as they are one of only four teams he has not scored against in his Premier League career, meaning it would be a first.

The only other teams he has failed to score against are Luton, Swansea and, rather amusingly, Liverpool during his time at Chelsea.

He has only played against the Black Cats once in his career, with this being a 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge during the 2013/14 season.

He played 66 minutes that day but could not make an impact, although it is safe to say he is much more capable now of scoring against them than he would have been back then.

Should Mohamed Salah start against Sunderland?

Although he can achieve something individually for the first time, Slot will, of course, not be thinking about that one bit as he needs to decide what is best for the team as a whole.

In all honesty, the best thing to do might be to keep him on the bench once again, especially as Dominik Szoboszlai excelled in this position at the weekend.

He had a good understanding with Florian Wirtz and really helped bring the best out of the German, suggesting it would be smart to play them both again.

Salah, however, simply has not done enough to get into the starting XI and even though he is going to AFCON soon, he might not get much game time before then.
