Man Utd have key advantage over Liverpool and other Premier League rivals this month

This week offers a somewhat unusual scenario for Manchester United, as they face a midweek match and a quick turnaround between games for the first time since late August. The humiliating Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby further lightened an already sparse schedule for a side not participating in European competition this year, allowing United to delve deeper into Ruben Amorim's strategies on the Carrington training grounds.

The Red Devils have only played 14 matches this season, a stark contrast to the 20 games played by rivals Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle. A mere four-day gap separates Sunday's victory over Crystal Palace and Thursday's clash with West Ham at Old Trafford, a rarity for a team used to extended preparation periods. Since the beginning of September, they've had a minimum of six days to gear up for each fixture.

Despite the tighter schedule, the fixture list remains favourable for United, who are set to play six matches in December. While their competitors grapple with a packed calendar of midweek fixtures, United still enjoy ample recovery time.

The foursome of City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle face a Carabao Cup quarter-final in addition to their European duties, meaning they'll likely be playing twice weekly well into the New Year.

Manchester United's schedule could have been more gruelling. Instead of a midweek match, they've been granted an extra day of rest thanks to live TV selections, playing Crystal Palace on Sunday and Wolves on Monday night.

Following their Monday night venture to Molineux, the Red Devils enjoy a week-long breather before hosting Bournemouth at Old Trafford. A six-day gap precedes their pre-Christmas clash with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The festive fixtures continue with a five-day interval until the Boxing Day match against Newcastle, followed by a four-day break before facing Wolves again. Both these matches will be home games for United.

The New Year kicks off with a short trip across the Pennines to take on Leeds, five days into 2026. While many Premier League sides face a more exhausting December, United's itinerary seems relatively manageable. Of their six matches, only two are away, with journeys of 75 miles to Wolves and 85 miles to Villa.

That said, United won't be without challenges this month. They're set to lose Noussair Mazraoui, Amad and Bryan Mbeumo to the Africa Cup of Nations from mid-December, making them one of the clubs most impacted by AFCON call-ups.

Nonetheless, Ruben Amorim's squad should see the coming weeks as a golden opportunity. As their rivals juggle European commitments and Carabao Cup fixtures, United can afford to put their feet up.

They also approach this stretch with momentum firmly in their favour. The unexpected loss to Everton remains their sole defeat in the last seven matches, and with fixtures against two of the bottom four teams on the horizon, they should be looking to extend that run.

As they kick off the month sitting seventh in the Premier League table, they're just three points adrift of Chelsea in third place. United must seize the opportunity presented by the festive period to ensure they start 2026 as serious contenders for a Champions League berth next season.
