The future of Liverpool was a source of disagreement between Jamie Carragher and Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp's claim that Steven Gerrard would become the Liverpool manager was opposed by Jamie Carragher. A potential return to Anfield for the former Reds captain, this time in the dugout, was theorised ever since he began his managerial journey.
After impressive success in Scotland where he led Rangers to an unbeaten league title triumph in 2021, Gerrard swapped the Scottish giants for Aston Villa later that year.
It was ahead of his first trip back to Liverpool, then led by Klopp, that the German opened up on his thoughts about the England great becoming the Reds manager in the future. When asked about that possibility, Klopp confidently stated: "Oh yes I do, absolutely.
"I believe it will definitely happen. Good for everyone." Four years on from Klopp's answer, whispers of Gerrard making a return to Liverpool have been made after a dismal start to the season under Arne Slot.
The Reds' 2-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday curbed their latest slide down the table as Carragher said the possible sacking of the Dutchman would leave his former club in a dire situation when it comes to looking for a replacement in the current managerial market.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, the Sky Sports pundit said: "I felt like Liverpool playing West Ham was the toughest of those [current run of] games, because of the nature of the opposition.
"They are a team that have been in the bottom three all season, a promoted team in Sunderland, and Leeds are another promoted team who are in the bottom three. It feels like if you don’t get results in those, where do you go?
"The idea of Liverpool changing the manager who won the league, Liverpool have never done that. Then, who do you get? The idea of an interim manager just feels like, who and how?"

When asked whether rumours of Gerrard taking the job are accurate, Carragher dismissed the reports and claimed the Anfield faithful are backing Slot rather than clamouring for Gerrard. "No, I wouldn’t imagine," Carragher replied.
"He’s been a manager at Villa and had great success at Rangers as well. He’s a legendary figure and he’s back, floating down Liverpool. I don’t think most Liverpool fans will be screaming for Steven Gerrard – everyone is desperate for it to work for Arne Slot. They’re on such a bad run, the flipside of that is then how long does it carry on?"
Despite suffering six league defeats this season, the Reds could go level on points with fourth-placed Villa if they defeat Sunderland at home on Wednesday night.
