Several Gunners star on international duty

Several of our Gunners have represented their countries in the second half of the November/December international break, with big wins for Spain, England and the Netherlands.

Mariona Caldentey won the UEFA Nations League title with Spain for the second time, beating Germany 3-0 in the second leg of the final in Madrid.

Our no.8 assisted the opening goal for Claudia Pina before Vicky Lopez doubled the lead a few minutes later; Pina scored again 15 minutes from full-time to secure a third international title in as many years for Spain.

The second leg of the third place play-off took place the same evening, with Sweden trailing France 2-1 on aggregate heading into the game in Stockholm.

Stina Blackstenius and Rosa Kafaji both appeared off the bench, with Rosa netting a stoppage-time goal to put Sweden 2-1 up on the night and take the tie to extra time.

But Kelly Gago’s strike in the second half of extra time saw France earn a 2-2 draw, and secure third place in the Nations League with a 4-3 aggregate win.

Away from competitive action, five Gunners featured for England in their 2-0 victory over Ghana at Southampton's St. Mary’s Stadium.

In a reverse of the previous friendly against China, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Taylor Hinds and Chloe Kelly played from the start, while Beth Mead and Alessia Russo appeared off the bench.

Although Alessia was only on the pitch for the final 15 minutes of the game, it was plenty for her to find the scoresheet, as our striker converted a late penalty to make it two goals in two games on international duty.

Victoria Pelova’s Netherlands side strolled to a comfortable 5-0 win over South Korea, with all five goals coming before half-time.

Our midfielder played 80 minutes and assisted one of Vivianne Miedema’s four goals in the game.

Australia beat New Zealand for the second time in the space of a week, this time by a 2-0 scoreline. Kyra Cooney-Cross played the final 15 minutes having scored a world class goal in last week’s 5-0 win.

Emily Fox started for the USA as they beat Italy 2-0 in Miami. Our full-back was substituted at half time, but was on the pitch when both goals were scored, with Catarina Macario and Jaedyn Shaw securing a comfortable win.

Frida Maanum played 74 minutes for Norway in their friendly against Denmark. Despite dominating the game, Frida’s side couldn’t find the breakthrough and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. At youth level, Vivienne Lia, Laila Halbert, Cecily Wellesley-Smith and Jessie Gale all featured for England U20s in their 3-2 win over Mexico, while Sophie Harwood was an unused substitute.

Viv Lia scored England’s first goal of the game, drawing them level at 1-1, before May Cruft and Ava Baker put the young Lionesses in control.

Mexico pulled back a late goal, but England held out to make it two wins out of three in this international break, having beaten China and lost to the USA.

After representing their countries, our Gunners will now return to north London, with our next fixture against Liverpool in the WSL at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, December 6.
