‘Not top priority’ – Liverpool ditch idea to sign player in January window

Liverpool appear to have ditched their idea to sign defender Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window.

That’s according to SportBILD. They report that while he has been discussed at Liverpool, no move is on the horizon.

They explain that those discussions at Liverpool involved either targeting a transfer in January or next summer. He’ll be in the final year of his contract next year.

However, the Reds have now decided that Schlotterbeck is ‘not their top priority’ at this moment in time. Those in charge at Liverpool have even refrained from making an offer to Borussia Dortmund for the time being.

Why that is the case, isn’t made clear. Either way, it works in Dortmund’s favour as they’re trying to convince Schlotterbeck to sign a new deal. His current contract expires in 2027.

BVB are determined to get that renewed and are not ruling out improving the initial offer they made. The feeling is that Schlotterbeck would likely end up earning more than €10m per year. That’s a big price for Dortmund to pay and it seems they’re yet to fully to commit to it.

But with Liverpool no longer pushing, particularly in January, their chances of getting Schlotterbeck signed to an extended deal have been give a major boost.
