Liverpool face a potential trap game against high-flying Sunderland at Anfield tonight before turning attention to a weekend clash with relegation-threatened Leeds United, who have been rocked by a devastating injury blow.

The Reds must first navigate a tricky encounter against the Black Cats, who sit one point above them in sixth place after an impressive start to their Premier League return. Sunderland have already beaten Chelsea away and held Arsenal, proving they won’t be pushovers.

Meanwhile, Leeds manager Daniel Farke is fighting for his job as his side host Chelsea tonight before traveling to Anfield this weekend.

Senior figures at Elland Road are reportedly expecting the German to be sacked if his side lose both home matches, with the club languishing in the relegation zone after six defeats in seven games.

The pressure on Farke intensified further with news that winger Daniel James faces at least eight weeks out with a hamstring tendon injury sustained against Manchester City.

Speaking ahead of the clash vs Chelsea, the German manager said:

“Some disappointing news with Daniel James,” Farke admitted. “His hamstring tendon is injured. He will be out, sidelined, depends if he needs surgery or not. It looks like he will miss at least the next eight weeks.”

James, who had just returned to the starting lineup for the first time since August, will now miss the critical Christmas period. “We need him back as soon as possible, as quick as possible,” Farke added.

“In four weeks, we will see a little clearer how long the injury will last.”

Meanwhile, for Liverpool, both Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley have been ruled out the clash – while Arne Slot has also hinted at some rotation for players due to the fixture congestion.
