Barcelona chief Deco comments on Marc Guehi transfer

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi finds himself at the centre of a transfer saga that will likely rumble on into the summer.

The England international has made his intentions clear—he will not sign a new contract at Selhurst Park, with his current deal expiring on June 30, 2026.

From January 1, Guehi will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with any foreign club, making him one of the most sought-after free agents entering the market.

Liverpool came agonisingly close to securing the 26-year-old on deadline day last summer, submitting a £35 million bid that Palace ultimately rejected at the eleventh hour due to their inability to find a replacement.

In fact, Palace boss Oliver Glasner addressed the situation once again this week to clear the air:

“With Marc Guehi, everybody said that I threatened to step back – that is completely wrong. I said, ‘If you sell Marc Guehi, and we don’t have the right replacement, we could struggle. If you are fine with this, then sell him,” the Austrian said.

“Then the chairman decided that Marc stays. I just gave my advice, but it is never a wish. It is nothing to do like, ‘They have to sign players for Oliver Glasner to sign a new contract’.”

Real Madrid have already ruled out making a move for the England international, with Guehi “not a priority ” in the Spanish capital.

However, Barcelona are also credited with an interest in the Liverpool target.

In an interview with SER Catalunya (via Football Espana), Barcelona sporting director Deco referred to Guehi as a “good player” but kept his cards close to his chest regarding any potential move:

“We have identified a lot of players [as potential options], he’s a good player,” he replied when quizzed on Guehi

“We know what we want, but we’re not going to speak publicly about what they are. We’re content to have a young squad, with players from La Masia, allows us to be more calm.”
