Former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ripped apart by the Spanish media following another below-par performance during Real Madrid's 1-1 draw against Girona on Sunday.

Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real from the Reds in the summer, has made an unconvincing start to life in La Liga. And Marca were brutal in their assessment of the 27-year-old after the stalemate in Girona.

Alfredo Relano, one of Spain's most renowned football writers, savaged Alexander-Arnold after he struggled against former Tottenham winger Bryan Gil and ex-Aston Villa left-back Alex Moreno on his side. He wrote: "Now that Trent is here, he seems like a clueless and insubstantial player, with the expression of a rabbit in the headlights.

"His quality at set pieces is masked by his right foot, but in open play he is non-existent."

England international Alexander-Arnold almost gave a goal away with a wayward pass in the first half against Girona and his crossing was uncharacteristically poor.

It felt as though Alexander-Arnold was winning people over after impressing against Elche and Olympiacos. AS had praised him, saying 'that feeling in his foot that allows him to create chances for his teammates'. They added that he is 'becoming the team's set-piece specialist under Xabi Alonso'.

But the situation can turn fast at Real and Alexander-Arnold appears to be feeling the pressure right now with his form inconsistent and he is facing intense criticism from the press in Spain.

Alexander-Arnold was booed on his return to Anfield as Real made the trip to Liverpool in the Champions League last month. He faced jeers as he warmed up and came on as a second-half substitute.

The manner of his departure is still raw for the Liverpool fans after he ran down his contract, seeing the club make just £10million for one of their most important players.

Despite previously insisting he wanted to spent the rest of his career at the Reds and one day become captain, he decided to leave for Real.

But the West Derby born sensation is yet to even provide a goal or an assist in 10 appearances for Real this season. He did, however, notch up two assists in five matches at the summer's Club World Cup.

Speaking before Real's trip to Girona, Real manager Xabi Alonso defended Alexander-Arnold. "Trent is a top player, and we need him," said the 2010 World Cup champion.

"It's his first year, and this adjustment period is normal. He's also demanding of himself, and we have to support him through this significant change."
