If Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s goal for Everton against Newcastle had not been a consolation in a 4-1 defeat, it may have been discussed more for the supreme piece of quality it was.
It was a brilliant goal. The timing of his run was good but the first touch to bring down the lofted pass in a tight space was exceptional. From there, Dewsbury-Hall showed great awareness and composure to quickly move the ball out of his feet and finish, giving the defenders very little time to stop him.
From a Leicester City perspective, there’s mixed emotions. With Dewsbury-Hall leaving the King Power Stadium after leading the club back to the Premier League, and amid the club’s issues around Profit and Sustainability Rules, there’s no ill will towards him. It’s a pleasure to see him doing well in some respects.
But equally it’s painful that a local lad is now thriving in a different blue shirt because City couldn’t afford to keep him. Every goal is a reminder of that.
There’s another reminder Dewsbury-Hall’s goals should perhaps provide: that players develop at different rates.
The rise of Jeremy Monga, Louis Page and Jake Evans, the former aged 16 and the latter two aged 17, has perhaps twisted the idea of when a player should make their breakthrough.
The trio all have bright futures and, especially in Monga’s case, look to be ready for regular senior football.
But it should not mean that players older than that and still in the development squad should be discounted, as if they’ll never make their breakthrough.
Dewsbury-Hall’s league debut for City came around a week before his 23rd birthday. His first league start didn’t come until nearly four months later.
And now, at 27, he keeps getting better. He’s up to three Premier League goals for Everton, his best Premier League tally, and with nearly two-thirds of the season still to play.
The quality of his finishes of late, including his winner at Manchester United, shows he’s still learning and improving his game. He scored some terrific goals for City, but it feels like he’s taken his game to another level since leaving the club in order to be able to score the goal he did against Newcastle.
It shows what is achievable through consistent hard work, a willingness to improve, and self belief.
City have a number of players out on loan or in the development squad who are a few years older than the likes of Monga and Page, but they should not be forgotten about as potential future starters.
Sammy Braybrooke is getting his first full season of senior football with Newport and it looks like it’s benefitting him no end, the midfielder improving week on week.
He’s 21 now. Even if he returns to City next summer and then goes out on loan again for the first half of next season, he still won’t be as old as Dewsbury-Hall was when he made his City league debut.

With his performances, Dewsbury-Hall is flying a flag for a City’s academy and providing a reminder that sometimes a little more patience is required for players to flourish.
