“Hopefully the points will flow” – Leeds United player uses Florian Wirtz to describe Whites struggles

Leeds United striker Lukas Nmecha is hoping that the points will flow at some point soon, believing their struggles are similar to that of Florian Wirtz.

The forward has been speaking to Sky in Germany about various topics, including Leeds’ return to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke’s side returned to the top flight this season as champions after a head-to-head battle with Burnley in the Championship last season.

They started the season brightly with a win over Everton but have struggled since. Leeds United currently sit 18th in the table on 11 points, with three wins and eight defeats so far. Fortunately, they’re not cut adrift as yet, with West Ham on 11 points in 17th and Nottingham Forest on 12 in 16th.

It’s been a hard adaptation for them so far, and some of their summer signings as well. Nmecha very much falls into that bracket. He was brought in during the summer but struggled after scoring in that opening win over Everton.

Now he appears to be back in form, with three in his last three, the latest coming in the 3-2 defeat to Manchester City. Like Leeds, he may have only needed time to adapt and personally thinks it’s comparable to Florian Wirtz at Liverpool.

“I think a lot of people thought that after this transfer, they might even win the league after last season, but it just shows the strength of the league,” he said.

“Players have to fit in with their teams. Adapting is always a challenge. We all know, for example, how good Flo is. He just needs a little time to adapt. I think that’s completely normal.

“But we’re also new to the league; we all have to adapt. Sometimes that takes a few games, and I think we’re slowly getting there. And hopefully, the points will follow.

“Every now and then, I send a message (to Florian Wirtz), but he’s a good guy. I also have a few friends, Jeremy (Frimpong) in Liverpool, with whom I was at City. I asked him how he was doing and all that, but yeah, I think that’s just the league.

“It’s very different from German football. But he definitely has the quality. You can see that. Even when he plays for the national team. That kind of thing will work in any league.”
