Mohamed Salah gives rare insight into family with daughter move

Mohamed Salah is watched by millions every week. Yet commendably, the Liverpool star's personal affairs are about as private as they could be.

In fairness, even his thoughts about what's happening on the pitch are seldom made public. The Egyptian speaks to the media notoriously rarely, only breaking his silence at particularly significant moments (such as at critical junctures in contract negotiations).

But from the little we do know, it's clear that Salah is part of a tight-knit family unit. It's always a sweet moment when he brings his family onto the pitch at the end of the season, with the sight of Anfield cheering on goals from his daughters now something of a staple.

This season, his younger daughter Kayan has taken the spotlight a little earlier than usual. That's because the pair of them have starred together in a commercial for Pepsi.

Filmed in his native Egypt, the commercial shows a bed-time conversation between Salah and Kayan. The Liverpool star insists that they have work early, but is sucked into a conversation when his daughter asks if he loves his job.

"Love my job?" Salah asks. "Ever since I was your age, I dreamed of becoming a football player.

"Because I saw what football does to people. I saw people celebrating from their hearts, and others crying from their hearts."

Salah went on to describe his jouney, from emulating his favorite player to realizing the dream that one day, people would wear his name on their jerseys. He talked Kayan through all of the setbacks that he overcame along the way.

"I found myself away from the people I love, and I kept going", explained Salah, who left Egypt for Switzerland as barely more than a teenager. "I would get injured and learn to be patient while I watched the teammates who want to take my place improving.

"And when I thought I made it, they put me on the bench, I kept going. And many people told me that I'm weak and won't succeed, and I still kept going."

Of course, Arne Slot controversially chose to bench Salah as recently as the weekend. But the commercial is a reminder that Salah has overcome far bigger tests than this in his career to date.

If a handful of people are writing him off now, it's nothing compared to what he faced at Chelsea. And even if his very best days are really behind him (and don't count on it), Salah has achieved more than he could possibly have imagined when he first set out on his journey in Nagrig.

His success has made him perhaps the most celebrated Egyptian athlete of all time. That leaves him with a pretty inspiring message to pass on to Kayan, as well as elder daughter Makkah.

"A dream like this, if it comes true.... a country's dream might come true with it," says Salah at the end of the commercial, as Kayan drifts off to sleep.

As the African Cup of Nations approaches, Salah will be hoping to make that true in an even more literal sense. But as the rare insight into his personal life reminds us, the Liverpool star has already won where it matters most of all.
