Neemias Queta has impressed as the Boston Celtics’ big man to begin the new season. The 7-foot rim-runner has shown legitimate improvement across the board and is among the league leaders in plus-minus over the first 21 games. However, even with Queta being better than expected, the Celtics will likely need to add a starting-level big to the rotation, either at the trade deadline or during the summer. Queta is best suited to a bench role, where he can use his size, rim deterrence and endless motor to add energy and intensity. With that in mind, Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale has pinpointed Walker Kessler as a potential long-term solution for Boston’s big-man rotation. Kessler, 24, is one of the best shot-blockers in the NBA. Last season, he averaged 2.4 blocks per game and dominated the glass, securing 12.2 boards per night. “Paying him in restricted free agency shouldn’t be a deterrent,” Favale wrote. “The RFA market inherently represses player salaries, and an over-the-top offer likely isn’t coming following his injury. Prying him from the Utah Jazz is the hardest part. He will cost assets. Boston can justify the biggish swing in a gap year by expanding the deal to duck the luxury tax. Utah has the flexibility to make that happen.” Kessler is in the final year of his $13.3 million deal. He will be a restricted free agent this summer. Boston would likely need to extend him an above-market-value deal in order for the Utah Jazz to decline their matching rights. Nevertheless, a center rotation of Kessler and Queta would ensure the Celtics had a talented tandem at the position for the foreseeable future. He’s been ruled out for the remainder of the current season due to surgery on a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Nevertheless, if Brad Stevens does start looking for the Celtics’ center of the future, Kessler should certainly be among the top candidates. Story continues below advertisement
