Trent Alexander-Arnold’s difficult start to life in Spain continued on Wednesday night.
The 27-year-old produced perhaps the standout moment of his short Real Madrid career so far with a stunning assist for Kylian Mbappe after just eight minutes against Athletic Club.
Trent’s long-range pass from a deep right-back position ended up as his first assist for the club.
However, Alexander-Arnold sustained an injury early in the second half.
Immediately after playing a pass down the right flank, he appeared to land awkwardly and was seen clutching his left thigh before being treated on the pitch by medical staff.
He was eventually replaced by Raul Asencio in the 55th minute.
Alexander-Arnold is set to undergo tests in the coming days to determine the severity of his injury, with the club reportedly concerned.
Any absence for Alexander-Arnold would mark another setback in his debut season at the Bernabeu, after missing a month with a hamstring injury sustained in September.
He has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season and had played three consecutive full matches against Elche, Olympiacos, and Girona, heading into Wednesday’s game.
The former Anfield favourite has had a difficult season so far
Five of his 11 appearances came at the Club World Cup, but even that was cut short due to injury.
He then suffered a hamstring knock in September, which kept him sidelined for over a month, only returning to the starting XI on November 30.
Alexander-Arnold had been booed on his earlier return to Merseyside two weeks prior, when he came on as a second-half substitute under manager Xabi Alonso in the 1-0 Champions League defeat.
