Liverpool failed to make it two consecutive Premier League wins when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sunderland at Anfield.
While it’s worrying to see Liverpool drop more points, there were several encouraging signs from the Reds.
Most encouraging was Wirtz, who was arguably the best player on the pitch, but Liverpool need to find a way to avoid conceding first in almost every game they play.
Next up is an away trip to Leeds United.
Florian Wirtz is beginning to show his best football
The German joined Liverpool amid huge fanfare and while he has been decent despite the lack of goals and assists, he is now beginning to have a tangible impact on games as Slot figures out how to use him.
If he can continue this form, he may well help Liverpool salvage something in the league this term.
The league title is all but out of reach but as the focus turns to salvaging Champions League qualification for next season, Wirtz will become more and more important.
Liverpool’s defensive record this season is alarming
I gave Ibrahima Konate a 5/10 in my player ratings but while he has been Liverpool’s worst defender this season, he’s not the only issue in Arne Slot’s defensive game plan.
The Reds, for whatever reason, are way too easy to cut through. These days, it doesn’t even take anything special to carve them open.
In 14 Premier League games this season, Liverpool have conceded a shocking total of 21 goals. For reference, they’re already halfway to the number of goals conceded on the way to the title last term.
This puts them on track to concede nearly 60 goals this season. That would consitute a total failure this season.
