After spending the first two months of the season grinding out one-nil wins, Roma’s once-dormant attack showed signs of life in November. Before last weekend’s frustrating loss to Napoli, Gian Piero Gasperini’s group was on a hot streak, scoring nine goals in their previous four matches. While they still weren’t getting much production from their strikers, the results on the pitch were finally compelling, as Roma temporarily moved to the top of the Serie A standings.
Still, despite that progress, the club was reportedly considering attacking additions for the upcoming winter transfer window. Manchester United forward/attacking midfielder Joshua Zirkzee [dominated the early headlines](/as-roma-transfer-news-rumors/38317/zirkzee-pushes-for-roma-switch-as-united-scramble-for-cover-up-front), with Roma trying to arrange a six-month loan with a €30 million option to buy. Given his age, versatility, and successful track record in Serie A, that rumor made a lot of sense.
And while Zirkzee may very well be Gasperini’s top choice, the rumor mill is once again linking Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa with a return to Italy. According to _Il Tempo_, Roma has reignited its interest in the 28-year-old Genoa native, who is reportedly tempted to return to Italy to improve his chances of playing for Italy at this summer’s World Cup—you know, if they qualify.
This may be a well-worn story, but Chiesa would fill an immediate need for Gasperini and Roma, so don’t expect this rumor to disappear anytime soon.
