Liverpool went a third-straight game at Anfield without a victory as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Sunderland on Wednesday night.
The Reds went behind to Chemsdine Tabli’s deflected shot in the 67th minute. The Black Cats saw less of the ball but picked their moments to attack and had hit the crossbar in the first half after Trai Hume’s effort was tipped off target by Alisson Becker.
Liverpool had their own chances in the first half with Florian Wirtz coming close to his first goal for the club while Alexis Mac Allister hit the post from a header.
Wirtz then thought he had scored Liverpool’s equaliser but his deflected 81st minute shot went down as an own goal for Nordi Mukiele. Liverpool had some late pressure but it was Sunderland who came closest to a winner.
Federico Chiesa was the hero as he cleared a shot off the line in stoppage time after Wilson Isidor had rounded Alisson and had the goal gaping.
The result is an improvement following losses to Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven but the performance left a lot to be desired with the pressure still on Arne Slot. It was display branded as really poor by former Reds defender Jamie Carragher. These are the current favourites to replace Slot if the Dutchman is sacked ahead of Leeds United on Saturday...
