Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw against Sunderland in the Premier League at Anfield.
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris insisted that his side were not downbeat after missing the opportunity to earn victory over Liverpool.
The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw against the Black Cats at Anfield. It was another big result for Sunderland after being promoted back to the Premier League, having beaten Chelsea and earned a point against leaders Arsenal.
The visitors limited Liverpool to a dearth of goalscoring chances and before they opened the scoring in the 67th minute, with Chemsdine Talbi’s deflected shot finding the back of the net. The Reds equalised with nine minutes remaining when Florian Wirtz’s shot ricocheted off Nordi Mukiele and it went down as an own goal.
Yet Sunderland spurned a golden chance to condemn Liverpool to a seventh Premier League loss in nine games. In the 94th minute, the Mackems launched a counter-attack and Wilson Isidor appeared to have the goal at his mercy. But a combination of Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker and the Federico Chiesa meant that Isidor failed to capitalise.
However, Le Bris told of his pride that Sunderland claimed a stalemate. The Stadium of Light head coach said: “I don't think so. I don't think so a bit because it was possible we had this opportunity to score the second goal. But they were proud of the way they played because we had different phases in that game. Dominant with the ball, good in our 4-4-2. Then we worked hard in our back five, 5-4-1 in the low block. So different scenarios, different phases, different emotions. At the end we were consistent."
Le Bris also confessed that he was surprised how much space Sunderland were afforded by Liverpool when in possession. He added: "We started well, the first half was interesting with and without the ball. Probably we didn't believe enough that it was possible to score and we did it in the beginning of the second half.
"I think we were even a bit surprised to have time and space to build up the play and probably they didn't expect to be at that level. We spoke about this final third and the way it was possible to disturb their back line. We expected Salah as well to come on the pitch and to change a bit the dynamics, so we are prepared."
