Everything the police said about Diogo Jota's fatal car crash

Jota's death announced: The official confirmation of the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, came from medical personnel at the crash scene. The first public announcement was subsequently made by the Civil Guard in Zamora on Thursday, July 3.

Tyre blowout: The investigation into the accident on the A-52 motorway is being carried out by Civil Guard traffic officers. Police stated they "believe the car suffered a blowout from the marks on the road".

Speeding claims: A source from the government sub-delegation in Zamora said that investigators are looking into "a possible speeding incident." However, claims that the car was possibly speeding have been refuted by eyewitnesses.

No other vehicles involved: A police spokesperson confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the fatal incident that happened on the side of the road near the city of Zamora. It was confirmed that no one else, besides the two occupants of the car, was hurt.

Police investigation: Police acknowledged it was "impossible to say at exactly what speed the car was going" at the time of the crash. However, the Civil Guard investigators expect to determine the speed, at least approximately, in their final report by analysing evidence such as skid marks.

ID process: The Lamborghini veering off the road and catching fire complicated the identification process. The victims' identities were initially confirmed using documents found at the scene, including a license plate, while forensic experts turned to DNA tests for final verification.

Reason for trip: The two brothers were travelling to catch a ferry back to the UK from the port city of Santander. Jota was returning to Liverpool for pre-season but had opted to drive instead of flying, following the recommendation of a doctor after a recent surgery on his lung.
