Wirtz showed some neat footwork inside the box and looked to have fired in an equaliser past Robin Roefs on 81 minutes.
However, replays show the German international's shot was going wide and deflected in off defender Nordi Mukiele.
"The goal accreditation panel has adjudged Liverpool's 81st minute goal as a Mukiele own goal," the Premier League Match Centre said.
When speaking to Sky Sports afterwards, Wirtz was awkwardly told that the goal did not count at his.

However, after a brief pause, he didn't seem to be too fazed as he responded: "Doesn't matter today.
"We drew, we wanted to win, so that's what counts today so yeah, unlucky."
Wirtz still waiting for Liverpool breakthrough
With 57 goals and 65 assists across six seasons for Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz arrived at Liverpool with tonnes of promise.
The 22-year-old was the British record signing before Alexander Isak arrived from Newcastle United for £125m.
Wirtz assisted on his debut in the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace, but has struggled since then.
After the Premier League goal accreditation panel's decision against Sunderland, the attacking midfielder is goalless in 18 appearances.

He has assisted two goals in the Champions League, but is still waiting to officially get onto the scoresheet.
Wirtz's father Hans recently acknowledged his difficult start to life at Liverpool, but believes he will eventually come good at Anfield.
"I think the league table clearly shows that there's still room for improvement in this football machine.
"But the mechanics will sort that out, I hope, he's such a good player that he can adapt to the demands there and that he enjoys it just as much as he did in the Bundesliga."
Liverpool stumble once again
The reigning champions have been way off the pace this season, and a draw at home to Sunderland has only added to their woes.
Chemsdine Talbi opened the scoring for the visitors with 67 minutes played as Liverpool approached seventh league defeat.

Wirtz is still waiting for his first Premier League goal
A Mukiele own-goal rescued a point for the Reds, but they are now 11 points behind leaders Arsenal.
A top four spot is still within reach though, with only two points separating them from the Champions League qualification places.
