Bucks’ young backcourt drives rally over East’s best Pistons after early Giannis exit

Kevin Porter Jr. poured in 26 points and Ryan Rollins added 22 as the Milwaukee Bucks relied on their young backcourt to guide a 113-109 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. Their surge helped Milwaukee settle in after Giannis Antetokounmpo exited just three minutes into the game with an injury.

“We both like to play fast and we both like to guard. Me and Ryan can deflect and get some steals and get to early offense for the team,” Bucks guard Kevin Porter Jr. said after the game via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Porter and Rollins, finally sharing the floor again with Porter newly back from injury, combined for 48 points and 16 assists.

The Bucks’ young backcourt also limited Pistons star Cade Cunningham, who scored only 17 points on 5-of-15 shooting. In the final nine seconds, with Milwaukee ahead 111-108, Rollins pressured Cunningham into a missed three-pointer, sealing the victory.

“And he’s a great shooter, he’s a great scorer. And I love to pass. He’s always been a two-guard, he’s always been a great scorer … I think me coming back kind of gave him the ability to be him more. That allows us to be a better team altogether,” Porter Jr. continued.

AJ Green poured in 19 points and Jericho Sims delivered a career night with 15 points and a matching career high of 14 rebounds, helping Milwaukee notch only its second victory in its last 10 outings.

Antetokounmpo exited early with what the Bucks described as a right calf strain, shortly after Doc Rivers told reporters before tipoff that team officials and the two-time MVP have had no discussions about a possible move away from Milwaukee.

“A game like this we kind of seen everything. There was adversity from the beginning. We had to persevere, be resilient,” the 25-year-old added.

“It made us come together. Especially when ‘Giannis went down, we had to will it in and figure out a way. I’m happy we were able to finish it.”

The Bucks entered the Pistons game after an ugly loss to the Washington Wizards on Dec. 1, and they also had to push through the steady swirl of rumours and reports about Antetokounmpo’s future with the franchise.
