Stat Attack – Bournemouth v Everton

Written by Matt Stevenson

Here is the xG from the Everton game, which is one we’ll want to forget about very quickly. It was scrappy throughout, with the first chance of note falling to O’Brien, whose shot was blocked (1 in 6) in the 12th minute. Ten minutes later, Semenyo had a chance (1 in 8) that went wide. Just before the end of a dull half, Barry hit the post from close range following a corner (1 in 3). At half time, the xG was AFCB 0.12, Everton 0.63. The second half was a similarly dull affair with Everton having 3 presentably chances (ranging 11% to 18%) falling to the hapless Barry and Alcaraz. AFCB had 2 chances within this period, 1 in 9 for Semenyo and 1 in 7 for Milosavljevic. The game had become stagnant again when Everton countered and a Grealish shot deflected off Diakite to wrong-foot Petrovic (1 in 16). Jimenez had a chance (1 in 12), but this was about all AFCB created after the goal, with Everton having a N’Diaye shot (1 in 10) saved. At the final whistle, the xG was AFCB 0.50 Everton 1.44 with Understat having a slightly smaller margin (AFCB 0.64 Everton 1.20).

There were four changes from the Sunderland game, with 2 changes at the back, with Milosavljevic (44) replacing the suspended Senesi, Jiminez (20) replacing Smith, Kroupi (22) leading the line instead of Evanilson and Kluivert (19) preferred to Tavernier in central attacking midfielder (CAM). Diakite moved to the left of the centre back pair. The first subs were on the hour mark, with Evanilson (9) replacing Kroupi and Tavernier replacing Adli (21). After 70 minutes, Soler (6) replaced Kluivert, and played left midfield with Tavernier going to CAM. In the 80th minute, Unal replaced Scott, although it was an unbalanced team, and worrying Unal’s average position was deep despite AFCB being 1-0 down and chasing a goal. This showed how well Everton managed the game after taking the lead.

We had 5 attempts (1 big), noting that chances can be provided after saves, deflections or a defensive error and not created. We hit the target 2 times. Everton had 13 attempts, 2 serious and hit the target 3 times. Semenyo had 3 attempts, Milosavljevic had the big chance, but this seems overrating it.
