Why Enzo Maresca was annoyed with Joao Pedro during Leeds defeat as worrying trend continues - journalist

Enzo Maresca will be disappointed with his defence following Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Leeds United on Wednesday.

Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo really struggled, with it being the latter who gave away the third goal that Chelsea conceded.

However, Maresca will also be frustrated with some of his attackers.

Cole Palmer missed a glorious chance, though a bit of rust is understandable after his spell on the sidelines, while Joao Pedro was ineffective.

Enzo Maresca annoyed with Joao Pedro for losing ball in Chelsea’s defeat to Leeds

There was one moment during the match when Maresca was really frustrated with Pedro.

After the forward lost the ball in midfield, the Chelsea boss reacted with annoyance, according to BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella.

Liam Delap was not at his best either and was withdrawn around the hour mark. Like Palmer, he has also shown signs of rust after a two-month injury.

Not all of Chelsea’s attackers disappointed, though. Jamie Gittens drew some criticism from Gary Neville for being too negative at times, but the winger still managed to provide an assist for Neto’s consolation goal.

His replacement Alejandro Garnacho was also a threat when he came on and created the chance that Palmer missed.

Joao Pedro’s lack of assists concerning

Last month, Pedro managed to score a couple of goals against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur. However, the assists have dried up.

Following Chelsea’s trip to Elland Road, Pedro has now gone 10 Premier League games without setting up one of his teammates.

Given that the Brazilian has spent some time playing as a No.10, it is a worrying run that he is on.

That being said, Pedro is still a quality forward. You would expect him to come good again.

Chelsea also bought the 24-year-old to score goals. With Palmer back from injury, Pedro is likely to return to the striker position and focus on that, especially with Delap not firing in the Premier League at the moment.
