With the January transfer window fast approaching, clubs across Europe are scrambling to finalize their mid-season plans.
For Liverpool, the winter market often represents a time for fine-tuning, whether that means securing a defender or sanctioning loan moves for fringe players.
But while the Reds weigh their own options at Anfield, a former Reds man is making headlines of his own
Anderlecht are reportedly looking at the prospect of signing former Liverpool forward Christian Benteke.
The Belgian will be a free agent in the winter window having officially announced his exit from MLS side D.C. United.
According to a report from journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Brussels-based club has made contact with Benteke’s representatives in recent days.
The 35-year-old forward is said to be seriously considering a return to the Jupiler Pro League as he eyes a spot in Belgium’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Still harbouring national team ambitions, Benteke is keen to stay on the radar of Belgium’s coaching staff, and a high-profile move back to his homeland could provide the perfect platform.
However, Anderlecht may face competition, with rivals Club Brugge also monitoring the situation closely.
The potential move comes just days after Benteke officially confirmed his exit from D.C. United.
Despite a prolific spell in the U.S. capital, where he scored 47 goals in 93 appearances and won the 2024 MLS Golden Boot with 23 strikes, the striker announced he would not be returning after the club declined his 2026 contract option.
Although D.C. United had hoped to negotiate a new deal, Benteke took to Instagram to bid farewell, writing: “Thank you to D.C. United for giving me the opportunity to grow and prove myself in MLS… Grateful for the journey and ready for the next chapter.”
During his three seasons in MLS, Benteke was a dominant force, twice being named an All-Star and earning a spot in the 2024 Best XI.
