Concerns continue to rise following Liverpool’s draw against Sunderland

Dramatic new reports have started to circle Mohamed Salah’s position at Liverpool after the Egyptian was named on the bench once again by Arne Slot.

Despite being a nailed on starting option for years, Salah’s form this season has led to his demotion. The 33-year-old was named on the bench for the second straight game when Liverpool faced Sunderland on Wednesday. Salah was introduced after half-time but he was unable to influence the Reds’ latest result, which ended 1-1 against the Premier League new boys.

With five goals and three assists in 19 games across all competitions, Salah’s slow season is raising concerns. There has even been a report claiming he has become a ‘divisive figure’ within the Liverpool dressing room.

Mohamed Salah Liverpool status ‘is crumbling’

According to Wednesday’s print edition of Sport BILD (relayed via Football Insider), Salah is now viewed as a ‘divisive figure’ behind the scenes at Liverpool. The outlet claims that his ‘status is crumbling’ at the club he has spent eight years of his impressive career.

Since his arrival on Merseyside in 2017, Salah has established himself as a legendary figure at the club. There is yet to be a season where Salah hasn’t finished as the club’s top goalscorer, and he is now the third all-time highest scorer in the Reds’ history.

However, this update from Germany rather sensationally claims the Egyptian’s ego is viewed as a ‘poison’ to the rest of the Liverpool team. He is reportedly one of the team’s top earners, alongside Virgil van Dijk and new signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, but this has caused ‘tension’ among the rest of the players.

Salah’s teammates reportedly do not feel his performances this season have justified the wages and playing time he has received so far this season.

Will Liverpool sell Mohamed Salah in 2026?

With Salah no longer the untouchable option in Liverpool’s attack, rumours are starting to build around his future. There was once a time where a Liverpool without Salah was unthinkable but now, his departure is being openly discussed.

Jamie Redknapp has weighed in on the Egyptian’s position at Anfield and he feels ‘something has to give’ between the player and the manager. If Slot doesn’t reintegrate Salah into his starting XI over the coming weeks, Redknapp believes the winger ‘deserves’ the opportunity to explore other clubs in 2026.

Salah’s contract expires in 2027, having penned a new two-year deal earlier this year after growing concerns he would leave this summer with Van Dijk as a free agent.

“I wouldn't compare it to when Alan Shearer was left out by Ruud Gullit all those years ago and it ended up being a massive clash where one had to go, but it does feel like something has to give,” Redknapp told Sky Sports after the Sunderland draw.

“There is no way Mohamed Salah is going to be content being a bit part player in this team. Whether it's in January or in the summer, if he finds the right clubs, I think he deserves the right to move on if things aren't going to go his way. I can only see that outcome. Now that trust is broken, especially with someone like Salah, he needs that confidence and love from a manager.”
