Report: Chelsea leading rivals in race to sign£79m defender in January

Leeds United absolutely battered Chelsea’s defence in their 3-1 triumph at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Tosin Adarabioyo, in particular, had a game to forget after making a mistake that led to Leeds’ third goal.

His shaky performance comes at a bad time, with Chelsea being linked with a couple of central defenders right now.

Was Tosin Adarabioyo really that bad against Leeds?

Here’s what the stats say…

Minutes: 90

Tackles (won): 1 (1)

Interceptions: 1

Clearances: 12

Recoveries: 2

Aerial duels (won): 10 (8)

Accurate passes: 95/104 (91%)

Enzo Maresca also has Aaron Anselmino and other internal options that he can turn to if it is ever decided that Adarabioyo needs replacing.

Chelsea winning race for RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba

According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United are all interested in RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba.

However, the outlet claims that it is the Blues who are leading the race for Lukeba, who has a €90m (£78.7m) release clause in his contract.

It is thought, though, that Leipzig could be willing to sell the 22-year-old in January for €60m (£52.4m).

Maresca already has a lot of centre-back options, so someone will probably have to leave before Chelsea sign Lukeba.

Some Chelsea fans want Adarabioyo gone after his performance at Elland Road, so he is someone they would perhaps be willing to sacrifice if they were the ones in power at the club.

Why Castello Lukeba could be perfect for Enzo Maresca

In Lukeba, Chelsea would be getting a very talented ball-playing defender, which is what Maresca’s system needs.

According to FBref, Lukeba is completing 4.76 progressive passes, 1.12 progressive carries and 1.26 successful take-ons per 90 minutes.

It puts him in the 84th, 84th and 99th percentiles among centre-halves for those three areas. Simply put, the France international knows how to play with the ball.

Chelsea fans should not write Adarabioyo off after one match; he has some good qualities. And as already mentioned, they have other centre-back options.

However, if Chelsea want to sign a new name next year, Lukeba could be a smart buy. Supporters will be keeping an eye on the team’s centre-back situation.
