Darwin Nunez salary compared to Erling Haaland as ex-Liverpool star could make transfer move

Former Liverpool ace Darwin Nunez could be on the brink of another transfer, mere months after his switch to Al-Hilal from Merseyside. The striker's record at Anfield was hit-and-miss, having spent three years with the Reds following his transfer from Benfica.

Liverpool initially forked out a whopping $86M (£64m) for the forward, a sum that could have escalated to $114M (£85m) if all add-ons in the deal were fulfilled. This hefty investment came with high expectations and pressure, which Nunez occasionally met, but not consistently enough to satisfy the club.

Every now and then, the Uruguayan would run riot against the opposition - most notably his super-sub performance against Newcastle in 2023, where he bagged two late goals to clinch a 2-1 victory for Liverpool, despite being a man down.

However, his failure to regularly deliver such impactful performances ultimately led to the club's decision to part ways with him, resulting in Nunez's move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Liverpool filled the gap left by him with two centre-forward options, recruiting Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, both of whom have experienced varying levels of success thus far.

As for Nunez, he's clocked up 11 appearances for Al-Hilal, netting five goals and providing two assists, as he strives to carve out a place for himself in the team.

Yet, recent whispers from Ole in Argentina indicate that River Plate are considering a swoop for him, having earmarked some funds for his wages for the forthcoming 2026 season.

Nunez might be on the move again soon, despite only recently completing his transfer, with his hefty wage packet likely to be a key factor in any potential deal over the coming weeks.

Erling Haaland celebrates

Since his move to Saudi Arabia, the former Liverpool forward is raking in a staggering $27M (£20m) per year, which equates to roughly $535k (£400k) per week.

To give you an idea, Nunez would be one of the top earners in the Premier League, although he still falls short of Erling Haaland's annual salary of $37M (£27.3m), or around $700K (£525k) per week.

This underscores the financial clout of the Saudi Pro League in luring players, while also highlighting the challenges other clubs face when trying to compete for these talents during transfer windows.

This could mark another dramatic turn of events for the striker, who had previously found it difficult to secure a place in Arne Slot's plans at the club after a tough season.

Back in February, the Liverpool manager spoke about his situation, saying: "I can accept every miss, especially from a player that has scored two very important goals against Brentford, that scores for us in the home game against Villa.

"I would prefer him to score, but the word 'chance' says it all. It's a chance, so it's not 100 per cent sure that the ball goes in, and players miss chances.

"That I can accept but what was a bit harder for me to accept was his behaviour after that chance. I think it got too much in his head, where he wasn't the usual Darwin that works his a** off and makes sure he helps the team."

In the end, this wasn't enough to secure his future at Liverpool, and his recent difficulties in Saudi Arabia might well prompt another transfer.
