Florian Wirtz has finally started to show glimpses of the world-class talent that justified Liverpool’s £116.5 million investment in the German playmaker.

After a frustrating opening to his Anfield career, the 22-year-old has recently produced performances that suggest brighter days lie ahead for both him and the Reds.

Against West Ham last Sunday, Wirtz delivered his most impressive display in a Liverpool shirt to date. Operating in his favoured central number 10 position, he was involved in almost everything good Liverpool created.

The German’s form continued against Sunderland on Wednesday, where despite another inconsistent Liverpool performance, Wirtz remained a constant threat.

Though the match ended in a 1-1 draw, his crucial equaliser – albeit deflected – highlighted his ability to be decisive when it matters. With 52 passes completed at 88 per cent accuracy and four shots, Wirtz demonstrated he’s becoming more influential.

However, there is still plenty of criticism being launched at the German international.

However, Newcastle United star and compatriot Nick Woltemade has once again come to defence of the Liverpool No.7.

Speaking in an interview with German outlet Stern, they asked him:

“FC Bayern seemed to be the big loser of the past transfer period. Not only did you move to the Premier League, but also Florian Wirtz, whom Bayern would also have liked to sign. However, Wirtz is having a hard time at his new club, Liverpool FC. Are you in contact with him?”

Woltemade then replied and asserted that Wirtz will “make his way” at Anfield:

“We talked briefly about the topic when we met at the national team. I find this debate about Flo absurd. This is a pseudo-discussion,” he said.

“Anyone who knows anything about football can see what incredible abilities he has. Flo will make his way, also in the Premier League.”

In follows his words of praise over the November international break, with Woltemade saying:

“For every player, adjusting isn’t easy. But he’s doing very well,” he said.

“On paper, you might not see the goals, but if you compare my games with his, he’s much more involved in play.”

“I’ve probably been in the right spot three or four times, received the ball and scored – but he’s very active in the game, gets lots of touches and makes good plays.”
