Real Madrid release statement on Trent Alexander-Arnold

The move to the Spanish capital was supposed to mark the beginning of a glittering new chapter for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He started for Los Blancos in their 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao last night.

But just as Alexander-Arnold appeared to be finding his feet at the Santiago Bernabéu, delivering his first assist for the club with a perfectly weighted pass for Kylian Mbappé’s opening goal, disaster struck.

In the 55th minute, Athletic midfielder Alejandro Rego accidentally stepped on his right foot, causing the defender to crumple to the ground in anguish.

Real Madrid has now confirmed the worst fears on Thursday, announcing that Alexander-Arnold had suffered a muscle injury to the rectus femoris in his left quadriceps:

“Following tests carried out today by the Real Madrid Medical Services on our player, Trent Alexander-Arnold, he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury to the rectus anterior quadriceps in his left leg. His progress will be monitored,” a Real Madrid statement read.

Meanwhile, Spanish journalist Arancha Rodriguez has reported that the ex-Liverpool man will be out for around two months.

This latest setback adds to what has been a disrupted debut campaign at the Bernabéu, following a hamstring injury sustained against Marseille in September that kept him out for over a month.

Across 11 appearances for Los Blancos, he has managed just 392 minutes of playing time, only completing the full 90 minutes on two occasions in La Liga.

Until Wednesday’s assist, he had contributed no goals or assists in the Spanish First Division.

The prior hamstring injury meant that he was left out of the starting XI for October’s El Clásico triumph over Barcelona.

Trent sufre una lesión muscular en el recto anterior del cuádriceps de la pierna izquierda. Estará de baja al rededor de 2 meses.
