The Hammers were linked with a potential free transfer move for former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

West Ham are expected to invest in additional firepower come the January transfer window with the club struggling for goals so far this season.

The Hammers are expected to sanction an exit for £27 million man Niclas Fullkrug and, while Callum Wilson has three in his last three league outings, the 33-year-old needs minutes managed given his injury history.

Wilson was the only out-and-out striker signed by the club in the summer despite plenty of links with other names. One of those was Leeds United bagsman Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who was available on a free transfer following his departure from Everton.

West Ham linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer this summer

West Ham had been linked with the striker over previous windows but Hammers News was one of several outlets to carry fresh reports. A free transfer appealed to the London outfit but it was eventually Wilson who arrived at the London Stadium as a free agent.

While it would be wrong to criticise Wilson, who has taken his chances when given them at West Ham, supporters may feel that the club chose the wrong option after Wednesday night. Calvert-Lewin put in another good performance for Leeds United, scoring and spearheading the Whites in a head-turning 3-1 win over Chelsea at Leeds United.

Both former England internationals who are proven in the Premier League and injury prone, Wilson and Calvert-Lewin have remarkably similar profiles. Picking between the two would have been a roll of the dice but it does appear to be the former Toffee who has the bit between his teeth, playing 300 more minutes than Wilson across all competitions this term.

Leeds United striker helps ‘beat up’ Chelsea

Speaking after the win over Chelsea, former Premier League defender Gary Neville told Sky Sports: “It's a nightmare for Maresca and a dream for Leeds. They've kept pushing, they've always been a threat.

“Chelsea have given them encouragement after encouragement after encouragement. The centre-backs have been sloppy all night. I'm not sure if Gusto's pass to Chalobah is the right one, you just have to welly it up the pitch. What are you doing trying to control it and play it back in there? And Sanchez… it is difficult for him.

“That front two for Leeds have beaten Chelsea up for 72 minutes. What a mess. Chelsea's defenders have been poor on the ball all night, playing it into their own six yard box to each other.”

That kind of performance is exactly what West Ham have been crying out for this season. Calvert-Lewin now has two goals in his last two Premier League matches and risks becoming a painful missed opportunity for the Hammers.
